One of the key reasons we selected the Onan Generator is that it has the lowest
noise level of all the residential generators we reviewed (about 70db at 7
meters). There is a Montgomery County prescribed noise level of 65db (daytime)
and 55db (nighttime) as measured at the receiving location, which to a layman, is
your neighbor.
No manufacturer that we found makes an off the shelf
generator that has a noise emission that low measured AT THE SET. However, the
noise is dissipated by distance and by screening to acceptable
levels.
Millions of generators are being sold and in use which emit noise
many times higher than prescribed levels, and if neighbors complain, the owner
may be required to dampen the noise. For example, the small portable generators
emit 80 to 90 db which is many times greater than the Onan Generators.
We try to make you a good neighbor by using the neighborhood friendly Onan
Generator, by adhering to zoning and setback codes, and by recommending
placement so that the noise will be diminished by distance. We also will provide
additional noise attenuating enclosures and fencing and shielding if required.
Since a power outage can be a life threatening emergency and can stop
business and the ability to earn a living, we are also working with the county
to establish less stringent noise levels during the periods of power outage.
